Frequently Asked Questions
What is tallow?
Tallow is gently rendered fat from ruminant animals. Rendering is gently heating the tallow causing the ๐ฑ๐ถ๐ณ๐ฆ oils to melt away from the rest of the fat tissue. The tallow I use in my balms come from 100% ๐จ๐ณ๐ข๐ด๐ด-๐ง๐ฆ๐ฅ ๐ข๐ฏ๐ฅ ๐จ๐ณ๐ข๐ด๐ด-๐ง๐ช๐ฏ๐ช๐ด๐ฉ๐ฆ๐ฅ ๐ค๐ฐ๐ธ๐ด right here in Wisconsin. The fat that I use is actually called ๐ด๐ถ๐ฆ๐ต, which is the fat that is located around the kidney.
What are the uses of tallow balm?
Our tallow can be used topically all over your body and has many uses. These uses include dry skin, chapped lips, damaged nipples from breastfeeding, pregnant bellies, blisters, eczema, acne, acne scars, psoriasis, rashes, diaper rash, chafing, sunburns, kitchen burns, cold sores, cracked heels, sun-damaged skin, age spots, itching, shingles, poison ivy, hives, impetigo, scrapes, scratches, stretch marks, scars, cradle cap, new tattoos and more. Pretty much if you have a topical skin issue give tallow a try! It is magical!
What is the shelf life and how do I store tallow?
It is best used within one year of purchase (however, I have a feeling you will use it before then). Keep the cap on tight and store it in a dry/room temp place, for best consistency. It is stored in an amber jar to protect from sunlight. If you buy multiple or donโt plan to use it right away, store in the refrigerator and itโll last much longer.
The tallow balm will freeze at freezing temps and melt at melting temps. If it freezes, move to room temp and let it thaw or warm in between hands before use. If it melts, move to room temp until it becomes a solid again. You may have to stir it. The consistency may change as the balm moves between temps but the ๐ข๐ฎ๐ข๐ป๐ช๐ฏ๐จ ๐ฉ๐ฆ๐ข๐ญ๐ช๐ฏ๐จ ๐ฑ๐ณ๐ฐ๐ฑ๐ฆ๐ณ๐ต๐ช๐ฆ๐ด will remain.
Why does my unscented tallow have a smell?
Since this is a completely natural, chemically-free product you may notice the tallow smell. Most skincare companies will mask the smell of natural products with synthetic, hormone-disrupting fragrances. Not us. While we do try to rid the scent as much as possible during the purifying process, there may still be a natural tallow scent. Most people become accustomed to the smell after a little time or just consider it a small-trade off for the naturally, ethically-sourced effective balm.
Is tallow safe for babies?
Tallow is safe for babies and those with sensitive skin. It can also be used on pregnant bellies and sore nipples from breastfeeding. We recommend the unscented tallow balm for all of the above, however, it is rare to have a reaction to the organic infused lavender balm.
Tallow consistency may vary.
Since tallow is a natural product and no preservatives or fillers are used batches may vary. We use the same process and high-quality ingredients each time and strive to have a consistently soft, butter like texture. The quality and benefits do remain the same!

How to use tallow?
Since tallow is similar to our skin biology it is quickly absorbed by our skin. A ๐ญ๐ช๐ต๐ต๐ญ๐ฆ ๐ต๐ข๐ญ๐ญ๐ฐ๐ธ goes a long way. You only have to use enough for it to be absorbed into the skin. If it leaves a greasy look or feel you used too much.
Tallow is ๐ฏ๐ฐ๐ฏ๐ค๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ฆ๐ฅ๐ฐ๐จ๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ช๐ค, meaning it does not clog pores. If you think tallow is causing issues with your pores, youโre probably using too much.
